A few months back when I first started blogging, one of the first people I got to interview was NYC DJ Dances With White Girls.  I only wanted to interview him because I liked the name. Dances With White Girls, it’s long but catchy.  Plus, his named spawned a few nicknames for myself and friends such as “Dances With White Boys”, “Drinks With Mexican Boys” and “Skates With Black Boys”. Anyway, peep the article.  And if you’re ever in NYC be sure to swing through one of his DJ sets.

Dances With White Girls is a crazy DJ name, right? That’s what I said.

I randomly came across him via myspace.com and was an instant believer when his page opened up to the Dances With White Girls anthem proclaiming, “Get back! I’m young, gifted and black!” over a crazy tech beat.

So how did Dances With White Girls come about exactly?

“It came about because everybody knows me as Frog . Also it’s sort of a joke for being the only black dude around who sort of does what I do. It’s based upon Dances With Wolves, the Kevin Costner movie, where he is the outsider white guy around the Indians,” Dances With White Girls explains.

Breaking out onto the DJ scene four years ago doing house parties in Brooklyn, Dances With White Girls gained notoriety working a Saturday in Manhattan.

“I try to be as uptempo and agressive as possible. I spin a lot of genres but [mostly a mixture] of lots of house from classic to electro to ibiza style stuff, rock, hip-hop and bmore. And I try to spin it in a style that hovers between being a hip-hop DJ and a club DJ,” Dances With White Girls said.

Now, the North Philadelphia native has quickly become a prominent DJ on the New York social scene. Dances With White Girls has spun over 50 venues in NYC alone. He is also a producer and is currently working on his EP which will be released under Throne of Blood Records, the label run by The Rapture and James Friedman.

When asked what he’d like the fans to know Dances With White Girls replies, “That I’m not going to stop until me and everybody I’m around makes something of this. I’d rather be dead than a failure.”
