COMEUPKID: Mic Terror

I first met Mic Terror this past July while I was visiting Chicago. I actually met him about 10 minutes before he was set to perform inside the Adidas store. His performance was amazing. The “stage” space was limited and their was some microphone difficulties at its start but Mic Terror, along with Hollywood Holt and Million $ Mano, still commanded the crowd. He even got some old ladies who happened to be walking past to enjoy the show and juke a lil’. But I’m not going to just sit here and tell you how “dope”, “ill”, “fresh”, “sick wit it” or “awesome” he is. He’s going to tell you and from there you can decide
“If they like good music they should know who I am. Years from now I’ll be on one of those lists with the 5 best rappers (hopefully I won’t be shot to get on it). People will say ‘he changed the game’…”
- Mic Terror
He’s opened for Slick Rick and Kanye West to name a few. He’s performed at just about every venue in Chicago. He’s done shows with fellow Chicagoans The Cool Kids and Hollywood Holt as well as ATL’s own, Donnis. But you don’t really know who Mic Terror is do you?
Mic Terror (born Michael Thompson) is a 23 year-old Associate Degree-holding emcee from the Riverdale area of Chicago, IL. He is actually quite the man around Chicago and not just because he’s your girl’s pipeman but because of his freestyle and lyrical skills. From his flow to his look, hip-hop comes up from the grave when Mic Terror touches the stage.
“Hip-hop is dead because there ain’t no emcees in it, it’s just rappers. Emcees are here to revitalize it. I’m a bring it back to life […] give it mouth to mouth resuscitation,” Mic Terror said.
Mic Terror is definitely bringing us back to that good, ol’ school original hip-hop while staying true to the grimy Chi-city streets he was raised on and what he knows best, sex.
“I only speak what I know. And I know sex pretty good. I mean it is raunchy but some people look at it as disrespectful. I don’t look at it like that because you do it in the room with your wife. It’s something that everyone does and everyone relates to,” Mic Terror said.
Mic Terror writes and arranges all of his own music and mainly works with producers Million $ Mano and Kendsl, though he’ll work with “anybody who got that heat”.
Reminiscent of Big Daddy Kane in his heyday, Mic Terror notes Redman, Eminem, Ice Cube, Ludacris, Too Short, 2 Live Crew, 2pac, Big L, Big Pun, Twista “he was a God here,” Crucial Conflict and Common as his musical influences.
Don’t get it twisted though, Mic Terror is no copy-cat, cookie cutter rapper from the 80s and early 90s. Though he does admit to using other rappers from the past to make himself better, he considers himself to be more of an evolution of those rappers.
When asked what separates Mic Terror from every other rap artist out now, he explains, “I have a story to tell that is yet to be heard by the hip-hop audience. I’m not really on the gangsta tip and not really on the conscious tip. I’m just a guy.”
“I’m not just in it for the money I’m in it because I want to actually make an impact on the world with my music although I’m not sure how that will be…I’m not going to put out no bullshit,” Mic Terror explained.
Mic Terror hasn’t put out any BS yet. With more mixtapes on the way and more collaborations in progress I’d say it won’t be long before he’s signed. Oh yeah, he’s not signed yet though he has got his eyes set on Shady/Aftermath, Star Trak, G.O.O.D. Music or Def Jam.
“I gotta get my weight up so I can get the kinda deal that I want. I’ve had deals on the table but you know you gotta get a certain amount of radio plays before you can have creative control and all that. I get a lot of college spins and Power 92 [in Chicago] and on Stank Buddha’s show in Connecticut,” Mic Terror said.
A typical day for Mic Terror? Well, “Wake up about 12 noon, eat a bowl of Corn Pops or Trix, usually write a rhyme or something, go shopping around Wicker Park, go in the studio, sometimes I just chill out in the studio sometimes I record, by 9 o’clock I’m trying to go through my phone to see what girl I can get to come over,” Mic Terror explains.
And there you have it. Straight with no chaser just because that’s the type of guy Mic Terror, Pipeman to the ladies, is.
HIOOOOOOOOOO!
