I first came across Sam Sparro this summer while I was working at WISH.  Kneesee introduced me to him through his song I thought was entitled “Like A Ghost” (we only knew the song; no artist, no title).  Towards the end of the summer I found him on myspace and discovered the song I had been jamming to all summer was, in fact, entitled “Black and Gold”. Go figure!  I interviewed him in September of last year when he was unsigned, had just released the video for “Black and Gold”, working on the video for “Cottonmouth”, doing shows all over LA and still working a regular job as a barista at some coffee shop in LA from time to time. (You can read the first feature here.) In a little over 4 months, so much has changed.

I recently sent Sam a message via myspace just to see what he’s been up to. I heard he was in London but I wanted to follow up with some of the things we had discussed back in September.  Here’s what he’s been up to:

I’d love to fill you in with everything that’s going on.  I’m in London at the moment finishing up my album. I shot a new video for Black & Gold (aka “Like a Ghost!!!” lol…I still tell people that story) which I literally just filmed yesterday for 16 HOURS! It’s going to look really excellent- It’s set in a big warehouse and take place in a kind of “secret society” meeting. I’m wearing a top hat and tuxedo and there’s even a little dance bit + flame throwers and fireworks! Good Lord!

I signed a deal with Island Universal Records in December which is huge news. They are the label for Amy Winehouse, Bob Marley, Stevie Wonder and lots of other of my favourite artists so now I’m really busy and never have time to sleep!
