PARQ is a free trend publication based out of Portugal. It was founded in 2007 by Francisco Vaz Fernandes, Valdemar Lamego and Carla Isidoro who began working together at DIF magazine. PARQ is directed towards the young, fashion-conscious and globally-minded public which take pride in being informed about new technologies, fashion, leisure and culture.
I first heard of PARQ in November of last year. The concept is dope. The magazine is divided into 5 sections: Real People, Trends, Beat, Titbits and Fashion. It’s an entirely free publication, distributed around areas of Portugal (mainly Lisbon) and available online via PDF with English and French translations. PARQ keeps you in the know internationally and environmentally responsible by conserving paper. They have big advertisers (i.e. Levi’s, Puma, Stolichnaya Vodka) and a circulation of about 50,000. PARQ just released their first issue this month and I’m sure they’re getting tons of web traffic.
I hope you all enjoy the read. Plus, there’s a few comeupkids we know that will have upcoming features *hint, hint* so keep reading

The excellent thing about the internet is just how much the individual reach has been broadened by it. Years ago, not too many people thought that one could make contacts in another country, especially having never traveled there. Of course, increased corporate globalization and myspace have changed that thought process in most recent years. However, for some, establishing virtual relationships just won’t cut it. Some still prefer to meet “in-person”, shake hands and share a meal.
The ladies of Concrete Stilettos understand. Mahelia, co-founder, knows the importance of an actual meeting. The Netherlands native has spent many years back and forth between Amsterdam and NYC making lasting impressions and establishing good relationships. But the Concrete Stilettos network isn’t just about people meeting people; it’s more about countries meeting countries.

I recently was told by a Professor that it was my duty as a PR practitioner to know all the celebrity gossip. Who told my Professor to just assume that I was going into high-profile celebrity entertainment PR? I don’t know. Not once have we ever had a conversation where I said that I was remotely considering it. Anyway, the conversation turned into a slight argument because she was telling me that it didn’t matter what type of PR I went in to, I would need to know what’s going on in the celebrity world. I need to know who’s dating whom, who was recently admitted into rehab, who recently landed that movie deal, etc., etc. I told her while I do think celebrity gossip is important to know in all types of entertainment PR I believed that to be untrue for all others because good PR practitioners and firms don’t need celebrities, celebrities need them… or at least I see that as the best practice. She continued with a hypothetical situation as follows:
“Let’s say you are representing a new and unknown product to the market–a personal tech product- and the product’s manufacturers don’t have much for advertising, their trying to gain attention for the product solely from your PR efforts. You only have a reach so far, BUT celebrities reach even farther. You need to know which celebrities will be viable representatives to the masses and know how much power that celebrity holds within his/her own arena.”
My rebuttal:
“No. Jocking celebrities for air time is not only taking the easy way out it’s a complete waste of time because you never know that they will represent your product; you’re always hoping they will. And if the manufacturer’s don’t really have money for advertising then they probably don’t have money to pay a celebrity for representation either. Wouldn’t a respected public figure (not necessarily a celebrity) be a better representative? And I still don’t see why celebrity gossip is pertinent to a successful career in ANY type of PR.”
Her answer was very long and complicated but basically stated that PR success is measured by how many influential receivers accept the message. Hmm… I’ve been pondering on this for about a day now. I still don’t seem to see things her way. What do y’all think?

I first came across Sam Sparro this summer while I was working at WISH. Kneesee introduced me to him through his song I thought was entitled “Like A Ghost” (we only knew the song; no artist, no title). Towards the end of the summer I found him on myspace and discovered the song I had been jamming to all summer was, in fact, entitled “Black and Gold”. Go figure! I interviewed him in September of last year when he was unsigned, had just released the video for “Black and Gold”, working on the video for “Cottonmouth”, doing shows all over LA and still working a regular job as a barista at some coffee shop in LA from time to time. (You can read the first feature here.) In a little over 4 months, so much has changed.

CHICAGO HOMIES… I know y’all wanna come up on a hustle real quick. I know some of y’all wanna be “discovered” or what not. A good friend is shooting the Count & Sinden song “Beeper” featuring Kid Sister. You wanna be in it? Detailed info below and if you get famous from being in that video, shout out comeupkids.
Call for audience:
People. We are shooting a new video with Kid Sister on Monday, February 4, in Chicago. It’s for the Count & Sinden’s song “Beeper,” featuring Kid Sister. A big part of the video is an intimate, sweaty, basement party style Kid Sister performance and we are looking for stylish looking folks down with the scene to come out and be a part of it. Also in attendance will be Sinden, A-Trak, Flosstradamus, and Catchdubs. It’s gonna be a party!
Exact location and times will be forthcoming. For those interested, know that we will most likely be shooting from 6pm – 10pm and you will need to commit to that entire time-frame. Food will be provided. You will also need to dance.
Also, come dressed to impress. We want this party to look genuine and we’re going for a ‘natural’ look (um, that means, no money for wardrobe) – but not sloppy. Come in your most stylish, fresh gear, all your best “grit and glamour” attire. Those colorful kicks? The fresh glasses? The crisp sweatshirt? Got your nails did? Good. Think St. Alfred’s, Huf, Wish, Supreme, Commonwealth.
Have a group of friends that you want to bring down? Cool, just remind them of these guidelines.
• No stripes – they don’t look good on camera
• No obvious and/or large corporate logos
Those interested in coming down should email Joseph Patel (joseph.patel@mtvstaff.com) AND Mark De Pace (mark@ghostrobot.com) and we will forward call times and location to you by Friday.
Good luck homies!
