NEW YORK PHOTO FESTIVAL 2008
The First International Photography Festival in the United States

Photography, one of the most important visual media of our lives, has been surprisingly uncelebrated, particularly in the United States. New York City, home to the most influential commercial and fine art photography community, has lacked—until now—a large-scale event dedicated to photography.

powerHouse Books and VII Photo Agency have joined forces to launch the new, annual New York Photo Festival, the first international-level festival of photography to be based in the U.S.

The inaugural New York Photo Festival (May 14–May 18, 2008) promises to deliver a dynamic, high-quality event in what is arguably the photographic capital of the world. The festival will celebrate both contemporary photography and the creative, inspirational talents of the people who produce this work.

The New York Photo Festival will be headquartered in DUMBO, an off-the-beaten-track, but easily accessible neighborhood on the Brooklyn waterfront between the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges.”

CONGRATS!

mortarboard.gif

I just want to send a huge congratulations out to all of the graduates that are finishing up this and next week! I know this is such an exciting time for all of you. Long ago I was given a journal with a famous Mark Twain quote inscribed in it which I have shared below, this quote continues to inspire me and truly is a matra for life. I encourage you all to live your best life as you go forward into this new chapter.

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”

and speaking of art shows…

okeefe-canna.jpg

The Georgia O’keeffe and The Women of the Stieglits Circle is still running at the High Museum in Atlanta through May 4th, I plan on checking it out tomorrow but i’m sure the show is fabulous, as I have seen much of O’Keeffe’s work before. Here is the lowdown on the show from the website.

“This exhibition places the iconic work of Georgia O’Keeffe in the fresh context of artistic predecessors in the circle of her husband, the photographer Alfred Stieglitz. The work of O’Keeffe and her contemporaries laid the groundwork for the idea that women artists possessed a powerful creativity equal to that of men, and their stunning images convinced Alfred Stieglitz and his New York audiences that women could reveal a new and uniquely feminine perspective on modern experience. Each of the artists represented in this exhibition at one time embodied Stieglitz’s philosophy of the woman modernist, through their lives and their distinctive forms of artistic expression.”

From 1962 to 1972 adman George Lois created some of the most iconic magazine cover art of his era. Thirty-one of them are part of a new exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. A show of his covers is taking place April 25- March 31, Please check it out if you are in town.

“Lois changed the face of magazine design with his ninety-two covers for Esquire magazine. He stripped the cover down to a graphically concise yet conceptually potent image that ventured beyond the mere illustration of a feature article.”

And Dubai keeps growing…

“Kuait-Based property developer Abyaar has teamed up with top international fashion designer Christian Lacroix to establish a luxury residential tower on Dubai’s Jumeirah beach. The 38-unit tower will include a Lacroix-designed façade, expansive lobby and luxury interiors, Abyaar said in a statement on Wednesday.

Marzooq Al Rashdan, managing director at Abyaar, said the firm had approached the French designer and established a long-term partnership that would involve similar developments around the region and internationally.”
